What parts of you do you use/not use?
For my internship, I use empathy, active listening, emotional regulation and open communication. These skills help to gain trust with my clients. I use my experiences from childhood through now to help me make the choices I make. I can relate to some struggles of a single parent, a spouse of a deployed soldier, a deployed soldier myself and as parent reunited with her children. My circumstances might be different, but some of the emotions are the same.
How do you discern when use of self is relevant, appropriate, and ethical?
It depends on the clients and the situation. It would also depend on what I would disclose. When working with adults, I might not disclose like I would when working with a child. When working with veterans, i will let them know, i am once as well so I understand some of what they went through
How do your identities influence your professional skills, actions, and choices?
My identities help me to maintain my professionalism and make sure that I treat others the way I would want myself or my family to be treated.
