Assignment Task:
How young are children when they are first exposed to technology? According to the Pediatrics journal, most households had televisions (97%), tablets (83%) and smartphones (77%). By age four, half of the children owned a TV, and three-quarters had an individual mobile device. Almost all children (96.6%) used mobile devices, and most started using them before their first birthday. Parents commonly gave children devices while doing housework (70%), to keep them calm (65%) or at bedtime (29%). By age two, most children were using devices daily, and their screen time was split evenly between television and mobile devices. Most three and four-year-olds could use devices independently; one-third were media multitaskers. The apps most used to deliver video content were YouTube and Netflix (Kabali et al., 2015). Parents are more likely to watch media with their child than they are to engage in playing games or using apps together, and co-viewing with their child's TV shows (74%) or YouTube videos (62%) at least some of the time. In all, fewer parents report engaging in co-using apps or games on a smartphone or tablet (42%) or playing console video games with their child (27%). Sixty-two percent of parents say they sometimes watch YouTube with their children, and 20 percent say they do not or only rarely do so. Only one in six (17%) parents claims to view TikTok videos together with their child, signaling a much lower level of TikTok activity (Mann et al., 2025).
