Assignment

READ BELOW

You are going to design the next study examining physical activity methods used by employees at Owens Corning and work productivity in Toledo, OH. Ideally, you want to have a variety of methods that employees can use during their workday to be physically active and compare these methods to see which is/are the most beneficial with regards to productivity. So, based on your research and programs, what methods do you use? How do you measure work productivity? And so on.

The study needs to start with the basics - study design, variables measured, population(s), inclusion and exclusion criteria, data collection tools, data analysis plan, and advantages and disadvantages to your methods.

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW IN DETALIS

A. What is the rationale for your program? Why study employees of a major business?

B. What is/are your research hypothesis(es)? How will you test these?

C. To what population(s) would you like to generalize this program and subsequent findings?

D. What approaches would you take to tailor your program to specific ages, genders, physical capabilities, co-morbidities, etc.? What about those who are pregnant?

E. What components would you include in your menu of physical activity options?

F. How would you work to make physical activity "fun" for the employees? Describe how you can make the process incentivized and perhaps, to some extent, like a game.

G. How do you measure work productivity? What input do you need from employees, their bosses, etc.? Can you compare by departments within a business? Perhaps see what department produces the most profit?

H. What information would you need to get from participants prior to program implementation? Remember, you will definitely need pre-post data to determine effectiveness of your program?

I. How will you collect these data? Be specific for each variable. For example, you could time each participant doing a jog/run around a quarter-mile track with a stopwatch.

J. What data would you collect specifically from your study participants during the program implementation?

K. How would you assess potential health improvement from your program? Be specific. For example, would you weigh participants before, during, and after your program?

L. Do you need Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval? Where do you get the approval?

M. What inclusion criteria would you use? List at least three.

N. What exclusion criteria would you use? List at least three.

O. What demographic variable data would you collect (e.g. age, race, education)? How would you choose to collect these data? You could use a mix of methods.

P. What anthropometric data would you collect? Would you get this from the work record and/or take your own measurements?

Q. What medical data would you collect? For example, could you get blood sugar and blood pressure measurements? Who would collect these data?

R. What past history information, potential risk factor would you collect from each participant? How would collect these data? Think about efficiency and accuracy of participant response. Why collect these data?

S. List some of your questions that you would use to collect data via interview or survey of your participants. We will go through them in class to see their utility and how they might be improved, if needed.

T. How will you try to reduce bias in the study design and data collection phases?

U. What measure(s) of association will be calculated and why? If you are doing a pre-post-test of participant weight, for example, what would be an appropriate statistical test?

V. What potential confounding variables will you need to assess during the analysis? Why?
