Jamie, what a powerful lesson you created on bullying! While I work with high school students, I still found things throughout your presentation very helpful. For starters, I like how you mentioned anonymous reporting systems. This is great because it allows a student to notify the school counselor of an incident without fear of their name getting out and suffering repercussions for doing so. I now look at teaching students assertiveness from a different perspective. I learned that assertiveness promotes pro-social skills, strengthens relationships among students, and reduces bullying behavior. This gives school counselors the opportunity to address assertiveness and be able to explain to students why it's so important they learn to be assertive. Another thing I gained from your lesson was the use of "I can" or "I will be able to" statements. This student-friendly language helps them be able to put their responses into terms that are easier for the entire class to understand since this age group can often have a hard time regarding how to word things. Lastly, I appreciate how you defined the term bullying to your students. You explained bullying as an ongoing occurrence that is intentional and done on purpose more than once. Whereas it is much different than having a disagreement or someone saying something mean to you one time. I often have students come to me and want to report a bullying incident,  when it is really just a one-time disagreement among friends. I also find that parents want to define it incorrectly sometimes as well. While we don't want anyone to deal with negative relationships at school, the sad fact is it is going to happen at some point. It's important as school counselors that we know the difference and can help resolve a one time conflict and know when to take it further if it really is a situation of bullying that has occurred. In closing, I also want to say I think it's so important you taught students in the lesson to not give the bully any attention because this is the reaction and behavior they are seeking. This concept is often the hardest for young people to understand. You did a great job on this presentation and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Need Assignment Help?
