How would you state the arguments main idea

Problem

Read the attached 'Big Debate' from the Toronto Star's Opinion section.

The 'debate' contains two arguments: an affirmative one written by Jatin Nathwani, and a negative one from Prof. M.V. Ramana and Schyler Edmunston. Answer the following questions about ONE argument only.

1) Which argument are you analysing?

2) How would you state the argument's main idea (in your own words)?

3) Does the article contain a topic sentence that states the main idea explicitly or is it only implied? Quote the topic sentence if you can identify one.

4) What supporting details does the author give to support their argument?

After identifying the structure of the author's argument, consider whether it is made persuasively.

1) Do the supporting details give good reason to accept the author's main idea?
2) Are there other reasons for which you do or do not accept the author's main idea?

Then, respond to ONE classmate's post. Write two to three well written and well thought out sentences in response to their analysis.
