You have been introduced to diagnosis coding this module/week and have seen how complex the process is. Making a coding error can be very costly-from causing an insurance claim to be denied to creating pre-existing conditions for a patient who does not have the diagnosis coded-and, if a practice is audited by a federal regulating body (such as the OIG), can result in fines and even jail time (if the person who coded the service intentionally coded it in error). Given these possible outcomes, how would you prevent coding errors if you or someone you manage were responsible for coding in the medical practice?
