To modern minds it seems contradictory that they same people who were influenced by the Scientific Revolution and in the rooting of superstition from religion (in both Protestant and Catholic countries) took part in the witch panics of the seventeenth century. How would you explain this? What role did scientific method and changes in theology have in the changing definition of witchcraft?
