a) One goal of both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. during the Cold War was to continue adding unaligned nations into their sphere of political and military influence--could you say more about the importance to each side in pursuing this goal, given the context of the Cold War? Of what value were these nations to the Cold War's main combatants, and what benefit or benefits might come to the unaligned nations were they to agree to enter a specific ideological camp?
b) Aside from reflecting a more moral approach to U.S. foreign policy, to what extent did the Camp David Accords have a direct connection to the Cold War and its persecution by the U.S.? More generally, how would you describe President Carter's handling of the Cold War and the specific challenges he might have faced in that regard?
