1. How does Tannen distinguish between report and rapport in gender communication? Do you agree with her? Watch the following video by John Gray. How would you contrast Gray with Tannen's theory? Is the gift giving behavior he describes similar to rapport? Are they similar or very distinct?
2. Reflect on the lecture discussion of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. What is the double bind? Do you think that women still face these challenge in today's communication environment?
3. Watch the following video. Define cultivation theory. How would cultivation theory explain the presence of this type of commercial? How does the repetition of these types of commercials impact human psychology?
4. Watch one hour of national news tonight. Define agenda setting theory. Describe how the news is both setting the national agenda and framing these issues.

5. Watch the following video. Do you think that this is a news-worthy event? Is the media creating its own news? Is the MSNBC commentator being professional? Why do people like Ann Coulter continue to be interviewed in the national media?

7. Define the five elements of the pentad. Do you think that real life is like a drama? Explain your answer.
8. Burke argues that humans are rotten with perfection. This concept has been used to explain recent genocides. What does he mean by this? Give a concrete example of how this can occur.

10. Define narrative fidelity and coherence. Give an example of a resonant cultural narrative. How does it achieve these standards?
11. Explore the following country music video from a cultural standpoint. You will notice that the lyrics and video narrative do not sync with one another. Explain why you think that it is the case. While the song is empowering, why does the video portray the singer as a form of prey.
