You are working in the Iowa State Department of Health and receive a phone call from a person who just moved to the state. They mention that they are looking to buy a house and noticed that the smoke alarm in the upstairs hallway is a model that also detects radon. They have never heard of radon and want to know what it is and where it comes from. They also want to know if radon is a common problem in the state. They also want to know how radon gets into the house and they wonder if they can assume that radon is not getting into the house because the upstairs detector is not going off. Finally, they would also like to know what health effects are related to radon exposure in case radon is getting into the house. Given what you have learned in class, how would you address their concerns (make sure to discuss each of the concerns)?
