Prior to sentencing, the judge reviewed the presentence investigation report, heard testimony from Katherine's grandmother, and from Katherine herself. Through this information the judge learned several things about Katherine. First, she had grown up with her father, mother and one brother. Beginning at a young age, Katherine witnessed her father beating her older brother on a regular basis. In her testimony before the judge, Katherine says, "I'm sorry for what I've done, but I can't control myself."
