Scenario

Imagine your dream job is working in your community hospital, as a primary care nurse on a medical-surgical unit. You may respond to this discussion prompt in any format you like. Consider using a multimedia format to make your presentation more interesting.

Today you are providing care for Chris Pender, an 80-year-old patient who is recovering from abdominal surgery 2 days ago. Chris is eager to get up and moving around, and frequently presses the call bell to ask for assistance to the bathroom and to walk in the hall. Chris winces with pain when getting up, has an unsteady gait, and is refusing pain medication. Chris tells you: "I must get better quickly so I can get home. My sweetheart needs me." You are a little frustrated that Chris looks uncomfortable, insists on not taking anything for pain, and frequently requests to ambulate.

Later that afternoon, Chris's spouse, Pat, comes in to visit. Pat's shirt is buttoned incorrectly and you notice bilateral hand tremors. You introduce yourself to Pat and explain how Chris is progressing. Ten minutes later, you enter the room and see Chris feeding Pat lunch from the patient tray. Pat asks "Who are you?" when you say hello. Later that afternoon, Chris asks, "Do you think I will be ready to go home tomorrow?"
