1. How did urbanization, new technologies, and the growth of a consumer-centered economy challenge older American values and ways of life? Why might some Americans have been disturbed by these changes?
2. How did the "new immigrants," "New Negro," "New Women," and modern artists and intellectuals challenge traditional assumptions about the American social order? What groups of Americans might have been most disturbed by these changes, and why?
3. How were nativism, the Klan, fundamentalism, and Prohibition related? What did they have in common, in terms of their causes, supporters, public expressions, and effects? What differences were there between them?
