Please respond to the discussion below using RISE mode. With regards to my school, I believe we do a good job gauging the success of ELs. Being such a small student body population, our school has ample resources to ensure the success of our EL students. Our special education department does a great job of ensuring that teachers who have ELs in their classes are notified of the EL status, and a meeting is held to discuss test scores and best practices for assisting these ELs in their classes.
Authentic assessment plays a critical role in understanding student learning because it evaluates how students apply knowledge in meaningful, real-world contexts. Its strengths include promoting higher-order thinking, encouraging student engagement, and providing insight into practical skill development. Authentic tasks, such as projects, presentations, and portfolios, allow students to demonstrate learning beyond selected response formats. Some of the challenges with authentic assessments include that scoring can be more subjective, reliability may be harder to ensure, and these assessments can be time-intensive to design and evaluate. Also, without clear rubrics, grading inconsistencies may arise. Authentic assessments complement formal measures rather than replace them. While standardized tests offer broad comparability and efficiency, authentic assessments reveal depth of understanding and skill transfer. For instance, I have used research-based projects where students synthesize information from multiple sources and present findings. This type of assessment provides richer evidence of comprehension, language use, and critical thinking than a traditional test alone.
Equitable assessment requires recognizing that students differ in language proficiency, cultural background, and prior educational experiences. In my ELA classroom, I can bring equity to assessments by providing scaffolds without lowering cognitive demand, allow caried response formats, and ensuring the content are cultualyl inclusive.
