Security of Patient Data
For the Discussion this week, you will need to do a little research, so be sure to give yourself enough time to respond. The security of the private information which almost any institution keeps is under nearly constant pressure. Healthcare organizations face a particular challenge, in that it is critical to keep patient data confidential.
To prepare for this week's Discussion, search for an article or news report that describes an instance where the security of private and confidential patient data was breached. Try the term patient data paired with breached or security using any search engine, and you will see how alarmingly common the problem is. Try to be sure that the incident you choose is not the same as another student's.
• Describe the offenders, if known, and the circumstances and motivation for the attack.
• How was the security breach discovered? What action was taken?
• Was a fine or other penalty imposed? If so, what agency imposed the penalty?
• Be sure to provide a reference for the article or news report.
