Problem: Transference could be a value tool for clients to further explore relationships or experiences that would normally be inaccessible. It could allow role-playing to feel more realistic and useful to the client. It could also be useful for the client to recognize or the therapist to point out patterns in the client's behavior. Session may feel like a safer space to explore the client's behaviors and relationship patters with the support of their therapists. It could also be helpful for clients to explore relationships with individuals that are no longer in their lives. Specifically, psychoanalytic theory places a lot of emphasis on the relationship between the client and their parents so it may be helpful for clients with parents have passed. Transference can take past experiences or relationships and bring them into the present where the client can actively work towards change.
While exploring transference with a client, I would want to be aware of my own countertransference. I would want to work on recognizing it within myself. I think having a good supervisor and a therapist of my own would help me recognize and work through it. I would also want to work on utilizing silence as a skill. Silence would allow both me and the client time to process; a client may have more to share or I may need an extra moment to insure I am able provide nonjudgmental interpretation.
