Assignment task:
For this essay, you will essay on one of the topics listed below. To craft a solid essay, you must do more than merely summarize the plot and explain that "in the story, this happens." Rather, you should incorporate your understanding of the topics we have studied to emphasize the importance of a certain aspect of the literary work. Whatever you choose to do, you must solid argument which is supported by concrete examples (ie. Quotations or paraphrases) from the specific texts that you are discussing.
The questions asked with each topic are for guidance only. I do not expect you to answer the questions specifically; use them to get your thoughts flowing. Perhaps use them to help you analyze how the topic helps you understand theme, tone, intent, etc.
To develop and prove a good argument, your essay should be at least 2 pages in length. Please make sure that you articulate a thorough argument and back it up with textual evidence.
Identify the major symbol(s) in one of the short stories that we have read this semester. What do they represent and why are they significant? If there are multiple symbols in a story, how do they work together to enhance reader understanding and connection to theme? Please provide several specific examples to support your argument.
