Discussion: How to deal with worldviews you don't agree with.
Two worldviews by default create conflict. If, in our culture, we celebrate diversity, how do you deal with worldviews with which you do not agree?
An interesting concept regarding conflict is that it does not always need to be solved. Conflicts of ideas stimulate critical thinking, conflict between sports teams creates competition, conflict between literary characters creates drama, conflict in life creates invention and ingenuity.
We do celebrate diversity in America and that is a good thing. However the only way to dissolve conflict is to do away with diversity and not many of us would argue that that is a good thing to do. Diversity stems from the idea that there are multiple ways of doing the same thing, seeing the same scenario and solving the problems that all people face in life. Diversity gives us different music styles, different flavors of food, different types of architecture and different genres of literature and movies. Conflict in the Catholic Church led to the Reformation and Renaissance. Conflict during the civil rights era led to greater opportunities for women and African-Americans, conflict in the colonies resulted in the establishment of a free and independent America.
