How to deal with nonadherence to meds or treatment regimen

Problem: In clinical practice we deal with nonadherence to meds or treatment regimen, and often time we say as an example" if you don't take this meds, your blood sugar will be elevated, and you end up in the ED..etc." Do you think this is morally or ethically justified? Is that violating the autonomy of the person?
