How to calculate the angular momentum change

How do you calculate the angular momentum change that a planet experiences as it is struck by an asteroid perpendicular to the radius. I thought that I could solve it by putting the conservation of linear kinetic energy (0.5mv^2) of the asteroid equal to the change of angular kinetic energy (0.5Iw^2). Is this the correct method of solving this problem. Illuminate me the correct solution.
