Problem:
Most experienced therapists will make use of their personal experiences to help their clients. This is referred to as self-disclosure. Doing so can serve many purposes. For example, it can make the therapeutic relationship more personal, can help facilitate joining and engaging with clients, and can give the client examples of how to solve problems and reasons to feel hopeful that they too can succeed. However, these benefits come with significant risks. Therapists must always ensure that their agenda is for the purpose of the client's benefit and must judge the right time and manner of sharing so as not to turn the focus of the therapy onto themselves or not to end up leaving the client feeling unsuccessful by comparison.
In order to prepare for these potential experiences, and without over-disclosing personal information, write two self-disclosure statements that might be appropriate for each issue below and state the purpose of the disclosure. Write in complete sentences and integrate this week's reading material where relevant. Need Assignment Help?
