Genes have been the means by which information is transferred across generations. Is that the only way that such a transfer of information can occur? Richard Dawkins and many other have suggested that cultural transmission is another. Examples given by Dawkins include musical tunes, fashions in clothing, and architectural techniques. Could some analogue of natural selection operate when culture is the means by which information is transferred from one generation to another?
