How the binary nature of the bookstores layout contribute

Problem: While there is much to say about Anderson's "The Bookstore at the End of the World" (it's one of my favorite short stories!!), I'd like you to think about the layout of the bookstore for your first journal entry. How does the binary nature of the bookstore's layout (American side and Californian side) contribute to the story? How does this store layout influence the characters? What other binaries show up in this short story?

Share a question you have in regard to the story. Questions will not receive full points if they are purely factual ("What is the protagonist's name?") or are wholly unrelated to the text.
