Problem:
As a student, how would you respond to this classmate of yours, including in-text citation and references
As I've been going through this week's materials, it's become clear to me why addiction doesn't have just one explanation. From both my psychology background and my experience as an RBT, I've seen how behavior is shaped by multiple factors, so it makes sense that addiction would be the same. The biological model focuses on how substances affect the brain's reward system and neurotransmitters, which can make continued use feel almost necessary (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2016). At the same time, the psychological model looks at learned behaviors, coping skills, trauma, and environmental influences that also play a huge role (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2024). I think both foundations are important because focusing on only one would miss part of the full picture. For example, understanding brain changes helps reduce stigma, but we also need to understand a person's experiences and environment to support long-term change. This is especially important for me as I hope to work with children in the future, where both development and environment matter a lot. Spirituality is another layer that stood out to me. Some of the readings showed that people in recovery often use spirituality to find meaning and motivation (Hammer et al., 2012). Even though not everyone identifies as spiritual, it can still be an important strength-based component in treatment and assessment. Need Assignment Help?
