The Standards of Ethical Coding help ensure that coders maintain accuracy, integrity, and compliance in all coding practices. AHIMA's Standard 5 states that coders must "refuse to participate in, support, or change reported data... intended to skew or misrepresent data" (American Health Information Management Association [AHIMA], 2016). This standard directly affects the coding process by requiring coders to assign codes strictly based on provider documentation and to avoid any form of manipulation, such as upcoding or altering diagnoses for financial gain.
To follow all 11 ethical standards, I plan to code only from documented information, follow official guidelines, submit compliant queries, maintain confidentiality, report unethical behavior, continue my education, avoid conflicts of interest, and regularly review my work for accuracy. Noncompliance can lead to job loss, credential revocation, legal penalties, and exclusion from federal programs. For healthcare organizations, consequences include fines, repayment of improper claims, increased audits, and reputational damage.
A compliant example of Standard 5 is coding bronchitis (J40) exactly as documented, even if pressured to use a higher-paying code. A noncompliant example would be changing "mild malnutrition" to "severe malnutrition" to increase reimbursement, which misrepresents the patient's condition and violates ethical and legal requirements (AHIMA, 2016).
