Spirituality tends to be more personal, fluid, and connected to meaning-making, while religion is usually tied to organized beliefs, rituals, and community structures. Diller (2019) explains that cultural groups express spirituality in ways shaped by history, worldview, and collective identity, which means that what "counts" as spiritual practice varies widely across cultures. For some Indigenous communities, spirituality is inseparable from land and ancestry; for many immigrant families, religion provides cultural continuity and belonging; and for others, spirituality may be expressed through nature, meditation, or personal reflection rather than formal doctrine. In diverse populations, these distinctions matter because spirituality and religion carry different cultural meanings. As Olcon (2019) notes, clients often expect providers to understand the cultural foundations of their belief systems, yet social workers frequently feel unprepared to navigate these nuances. This gap can lead to misunderstandings or missed opportunities for healing, especially when spirituality is a core coping mechanism.
