Problem:
Discussion response to: It is very important for social workers to be able to effectively balance the role of an advocate for community members while also empowering these individuals to take action on their own behalf. In order to effectively balance the role of an advocate while also empowering community members the social worker will have to adhere to NASW code of ethics and standards, follow facility policy and practice, and use techniques such as supervision (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). As social workers we want to in a sense work ourselves out of a job. We want to empower the clients to be independent while also advocating for their needs. An example for maintaining this balance would be a community member needing assistance with discussing health care options with their PCP. The social worker would help with communication while also empowering the client the communicate with healthcare providers on their own. We want the client to know we can help but we want them to at least try it on their own first or the social worker and client can work on it together versus separately. This will help the client be more independent but will also let the social worker advocate for the client. Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hull, G. H., Jr. (2018).
