How regular use reinforces the synaptic connection

Question: In order for the synapse to survive it must be used by the organism on a fairly regular basis. Regular use reinforces the synaptic connection and ensures the survival of that connection and of the neuron itself. While this is relatively simple to understand, it does have some important consequences. Imagine that the synapse in question is between the brain and a leg muscle, so it involves a motor neuron. If the organism can walk around activating the leg muscle repeatedly, the synapse will survive. However, if the individual is in an environment where walking is impossible (confined in a small cage, say), then any synapse between the brain and leg that occurs will not be reinforced through use and will eventually die. In this sense the environment can have a significant impact upon neuronal survival. The futility of arguing whether nature or nurture is responsible for any behaviour becomes obvious - nature and nurture work together in developing the nervous system and neuronal synapses. Explain.
