Race is definitely a powerful and contentious topic in todays society. Robert Welsch (2023) defines race as " A system that organizes people into hierarchical groups based on specific physical traits that are thought to reflect fundamental and innate differences that are rooted in genetic and biological differences." in the textbook. Anthropology looks at race as more a social construct than a biological one. To use biological characteristics to group people together based on race is problematic because humans can not be genetically isolated. The reason there are different colors of skins for the human race is because it changed to adapt to the climate that people where living in. In northern climates people tend to have lighter skin to help absorb sunlight while in hotter climates people have darker skin to protect them from sunlight.
