How provide evidence-based care when nurse-to-patient ratios

Problem

Evidence based practice provides valid evidence and best available options. There are many barriers that prevent the United States from reaching the once stated goal of 90% of practice being evidence-based by 2020. One barrier that prevent the implementation of EBP is nurses having a heavy workload in the hospital setting. How can we provide evidence-based care when the nurse-to-patient ratios are sometimes unbearable? Nurses wear many hats. We are the eyes and ears for the physician, the aide, the phlebotomist, and the therapist. Another barrier that exists is resistance is that some nurses are reluctant to change. Getting them to step outside of the norm may be a challenge and can seem impossible.

There are ways in which these 2 barriers may be addressed. Both will take support from administration as well as dedication from all staff members. Nurses can work together to help one another. Teamwork and motivation can be the drive needed to ease the workload. Secondly, changing the workplace culture may not be an easy take but it can be done. It takes persistence, perseverance, and a willingness to be open to new options along the way (Ginex,2018). Both will improve patient care and lead to patient satisfaction as well as greater productivity among staff.
