I am from Harlan, KY, a small town in the southeastern part of the state.

I am 38 years old and have been married for 18 years. I have two sons, ages 15 and 16, who keep me busy with their sports activities and academic pursuits. These two young men are the very essence of joy and meaning in my life!

Reading and writing have been my favorite hobbies since childhood. Writing helps me express myself and find peace within myself. Over the course of my career, I have followed a diverse path. I have owned a salon and worked as a Master Cosmetologist for 15 years now. I have also worked as an Environmental Educator, teaching children about sustainable practices and environmental conservation.

I enjoy coaching my 15-year-old son's school and AAU basketball teams, and I absolutely love working with such a talented group of young men. I have always been drawn to a career in counseling, and I am grateful for the numerous blessings, career opportunities, and educational experiences I have had.

I started questioning the patterns I repeat in my marriage and with my children, and how much fear of loss or discomfort influences my choices. I also wondered if I, too, look for quick fixes instead of long-term solutions, and how that could be affecting my well-being. I also thought about how much of my emotional discomfort comes from unresolved experiences from the past that still influence my actions.

As a future Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), these ideas are very important and show that therapy should focus on patterns, not just surface problems. Professionals need to pay attention to how clients act during therapy, since it often reflects how they act outside of therapy. When clients appear to be withdrawn, are resistant, or feel uncomfortable, these feelings can provide the client as well as the professional with some valuable insights.

This perspective can also change how professionals manage expectations with clients. It is important to be clear that therapy takes time and to help clients understand their relationship patterns. Hello, my name is Tasha. I work at a Recovery Center in Ky, as the phase 1 case manager. This is a 108-bed residential behavioral modification program for women dealing with substance use and mental health issues. I like to watch Ghost Adventures or some crime documentaries. I will be going on vacation in about two weeks to one of our favorite places, Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I am trying to get up the courage to ride the ski lift to Anakeesta, as I am ridiculously afraid of heights. I love spending cool nights out around my fire pit, listening to music, and going on road trips.

Counseling is not just for any one type of person or situation. Counseling is a tool to help someone understand themselves better, improve relationships, or maintain their emotional well-being. The one key takeaway I got from this video is that therapy can be seen as preventative care, not just for someone in crisis. I think this is an important concept, as most people reach out for help after they have hit rock bottom. Watching this video has helped me understand that I should seek counseling. I met with a counselor one time, and I really liked her. I scheduled my next appointment two weeks out, and before that appointment, she messaged me to say she would no longer be working there and had to cancel me as a client. It took a lot of courage for me to reach out, and I guess I am overwhelmed with trying to find another counselor. This video made me think about what mental health care would look like if it were viewed as preventative care, and not just for those with mental illnesses or interventions. Even if someone does not feel they are struggling with anything, we could seek counseling as a check-up, the same as our annual check-ups with our primary care doctors. I might show this TED Talk to the residents at my work, as she made some interesting points and helped me understand how important and helpful counseling can be.

Hello, my name is Clark. I'm from Kentucky. I am married, have 3 children, and 7 grandchildren. I work full-time as a Case Manager at a mental health agency, and I am also a Respiratory Therapist. I enjoy helping others and look forward to learning more about mental health and ways to better support people. One thing that stood out to me was that counseling can help anyone, not just people going through major mental health issues. I think that's important because many people are afraid or embarrassed to seek help. The video reinforced my belief that therapy can provide support, coping skills, and personal growth.
