One of the most powerful approaches to sustainability is multisolving, which is the practice of looking for synergies in solutions so that one intervention, technology, or investment can contribute to solving multiple problems. Transportation is the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions. Most of this is due to single occupant car usage. 60% of car trips are less than 6 miles, and nearly 75% of all car trips are less than 10 miles.*
PM 2.5 and PM 10 are an airborne particulate pollutants that exacerbate asthma and lead to a variety of pulmonary and coronary diseases. Due to proximity to pollution sources, majority minority neighborhoods tend to have higher rates of particulate pollution and, not coincidentally, higher rates of asthma and some cancers. The main source of particulate pollution is from combustion sources on roadways.
A food desert is an area that has limited access to affordable and nutritious food. Food deserts tend to be inhabited by low-income residents with inadequate access to transportation, which makes them less attractive markets for large supermarket chains.
In many urban areas there is a lack of market rate as well as affordable housing. One of the impediments to building more housing is the need to allocate space to parking for residents' cars.
Road traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans aged 15 to 24. After firearms, the next leading cause of death in children under 15 is motor vehicle crashes.**
