Problem:
For my research paper, I chose to research how poverty is a contributing factor in child abuse, specifically in neglect, within the child welfare system. So far my research shows that families who are experiencing difficult meeting basic needs, such as food, shelter, clothing, are more likely to have children enter into the foster system due to neglect. Two possible causes of child abuse can be linked to family poverty and community poverty. Family poverty is a specific family's lack of access to essential resources limiting support (Sattler, 2023). The lack of essential resources can lead to physiological stress which can increase parental stress which can cause harsh parenting that leads to harmful behavior. The other possible cause of child abuse can be linked to community poverty. Often times, this can lead to reducing opportunities of employment and social support. This can cause stressors in the home (Maguire- Jack, 2023). The effects of poverty and child neglect can be long-lasting. First, children who experience neglect at an early age, are at a greater risk for repeated neglect soon after. (Maguire- Jack, 2023). Secondly, the neglect can impact their emotional, physical and cognitive development. When a child's basic needs are not met, it can lead to poor health, developmental delays, forming secure attachments (Drake, 2023).
