How overlap between state and federal policies affect family

Assignment Part I: There are five topics listed and include child support, income support, pregnancy discrimination, family leave and food assistance.  Pick three topics to write about and identify the state and federal policies that currently exist for these topics.  Provide an overview of each program and description of the programs and their criteria. You are also expected to identify if there is any overlap between the state and federal policies that affect families in this area.

Assignment Part II: Read the vignette: Susie and John and a Potential Unplanned Pregnancy then answer the following questions.

1. How does Susie define her family? If she is pregnant, and decides to have the baby, how could this change?

2. What laws would protect Susie if she decides that she did not want to carry her pregnancy to term?

3. What rights Susie and John have as teenage parents, and how might their rights be limited?

4. If Susie decides to have the baby and give it up for adoption, what support from government or private agencies should she expect to receive? Does it matter where she lives?

5. What role might race, class, gender, and other aspects of identity play in this vignette?
