Problem:
I do believe that our environment shapes who we are. Our behaviors can model our environment and what we learn. This supports Bandura's theory. We often knowingly and unknowingly model our environment. Children are highly influenced. They often model the adults they are around and what they learn in school. For example, if a child lives in a household where the family does not have communication skills that are understanding, kind, and open, then the child will begin to model the communication style in the home. Another example is if a child grows up in a home where tidiness is expected, such as all beds are to be made every morning when they wake up, then they will begin modeling this behavior and continue this habit or behavior as they become an adult.
Some may say personality is something that we learn, and some may say our personality is something we do not learn. It depends on the person's perception and ideas. I believe personality is something that is in our DNA and something that we learn. It depends on the personality trait we are looking at. This is where observational learning would come into play. Observational learning shapes some of our personality traits. An example of this could be anger. If a person observes someone becoming angry or aggressive easily when communicating, then another person could observe this behavior, retain it, and model it. Personally, I think I have learned some personal traits. For example, before I worked in corrections, I did not have much structure or discipline when it came to my lifestyle. However, after working in corrections, I now thrive on discipline and structure. I have learned how to become disciplined. If I do not have discipline or structure, then I feel as if I am living in chaos. Need Assignment Help?
