Assignment Task:
Review the following three articles to help guide your thinking.
Article: High-performance athletes' transition out of sport: developing corporate social responsibility By Hee Jung Hong & Ian Fraser
Article: The organizational identification and wellbeing framework: theorizing about how sport organizations contribute to crisis response and recovery
Article: Maltreatment in Youth Sport: A Systemic Issue
Early in the course, we discuss how organizational decisions and structures can create a culture. We examined the difference between culture within a community and the formalized relationships between employees. We then tied that to commitment to the job and support for a group's purpose.
The three articles show the negative effects of a toxic culture shielded by poor organizational structures. Kerr et al. write about the USA Gymnastics scandal. Inoue et al. write about crisis response in sport organizations. Hong & Fraser discuss athletes who retire from high-level sport. Your task is to discuss the pitfalls of poor organizational culture and how to fix it.
You will each present for about 30-45 minutes on the topic. How you present is completely up to you. If you want to send a PowerPoint or another document before the next class, you may. You are expected to lead a semi-structured discussion.
Your presentation should include three parts:
What do we mean by Organizational Behavior in the sport industry? Need Assignment Help?
How is sport different from other fields? Does the drive to "win" cause us to act differently in times of crisis?
What do the articles discuss and what lessons can be drawn from the readings?
What theories are foundational to the articles?
What do the theories say? Do you agree with their use?
Are the theories universally applicable, or are there flaws in them? (This may require some additional readings)
How have you experienced negative culture around a sport organization?
What was the cause of the culture?
How did it improve?
