You are a land manager of a 50,000 acre Bureau of Land Management recreation area. Of that land, 20,000 acres is designated wilderness. Research the Wilderness Act and the designation of wilderness areas and answer the following questions. Remember to provide fully developed answers to each question. Use at least 5 cited sources for this mid-term assessment.
a. Explain the Wilderness Act - when it was passed, its basic principles, and the intent of Congress in passing it.
b. How much designated wilderness is there in the U.S.? Which agencies manage wilderness? What is the process for designating new wilderness areas?
c. Fully describe the restrictions placed on designated wilderness. What can you do on this20,000 acres? What is prohibited? Give clear examples and provide a fully developed essay response.
d. A wildfire is raging across your BLM land. The US Forest Service is demanding full access to your wilderness area to fight the fire. What do you tell them? Describe how you will deal with the fire. What is your rationale for taking those actions?
