The internet grows larger every day. There are 328 million devices that connect to the internet each month (Yardney, 2016). Researchers estimate that by 2022 an average home will contain 500 smart devices (Yardney, 2016).

This is a staggering number. It is important that individuals, companies, and internet service providers begin preparing for this now.

When considering the infrastructure that supports the internet, there are a few areas that should be highlighted to protect. The network is a very important layer of the internet. It is quite literally the fabric that holds the internet together.

Compromising a network can lead to compromise in several other areas. When securing a node, it is important to keep in mind the basics of strong secrets, strong encryption, limiting physical access to equipment, and other such best practices. Additionally, one should take into consideration more advanced attacks, such as BGP hijacking (Julian, 2015).

Another area of concern are database servers. Ensuring the security of data entrusted to an organization by their customers should be of utmost concern. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, securing the user should be a strong consideration. Ensuring that users are well equipped to detect and report threats within an environment, will go a long way in security.

As a security practitioner, it is incumbent upon them to be astutely aware of the threats that exist within the environment. This comes with the territory of being an information security professional.

It is most definitely a position of trust. While no one should ever abuse their power, and utilize their access for nefarious purposes, it is important to be both able and willing to investigate what may be a perceived threat to the environment.

Sometimes this may venture into the uncomfortable territory of analyzing a user's web access or installed applications. This is ok, and is to be expected, if a threat is perceived. The Bible instructs a shepherd to watch over their flock, not for dishonest gain, but in the spirit of godliness (I Peter 5:2, NIV).

In much the same way, an information security professional must be diligent about guarding their environment, even when it is uncomfortable. References Yardney, M. (2016, September 29).
