How many children might be born with chromosomal syndromes

Assignment task: Maricopa Community College district has a population of 220,000 students.

Imagine you ran a hospital and there were 220,000 babies born.

For example, if a disorder has a 1 in 3000 chance, then in your population of 25,960 people, you would expect: 25,960/3000 = approximately 9 people with that disorder (I rounded up from 8.6, because you can't have 0.6 of a person!)

Look up the rate of each disorder, and calculate how many children might be born with each of the following chromosomal syndromes that arise from errors in meiosis

a) Down

b) Trisomy 18

c) Klinefelter

d) Turner
