During the 1970s and early 1980s, physicians were generally reimbursed on a fee-for-service basis, and yet by the mid-1990s, managed care organizations had become a major player in the health care field, capable of imposing limitations on physician reimbursement. Discuss the following issues related to this.
1. Discuss three specific circumstances that explain how managed care organizations were able to extract price concessions from hospitals and physicians in the early to mid-1980s.
2. Fully discuss at least four of the mechanisms by which managed care organizations attempt to control costs. Please do not simply list them. Be sure to explain how each mechanism controls costs.
3. List and explain at least four reasons why managed care has not fully succeeded in controlling rising health care costs.
