Jahari is a senior in high school and lives with his mom in a community known for high drug use. Growing up in this community, seeing people use drugs became a "normal" occurrence for Jahari. His mom and her friends often used drugs when they would have parties, and his mom is currently addicted to opioid pills and uses heroin when she can't get opioids. He does not have any siblings, so he is responsible for taking care of himself and his mom. He often finds himself very stressed out because of this. However, because of what he has learned in school and from personal experience, he understands how dangerous addiction and substance use is. Jahari plans to go to trade school after graduation and expects to be drug tested before he is accepted to the program. Jahari knows he could get in serious trouble and be suspended from the trade school if he ever decides to try drugs, so he has decided that he will never participate in substance use.

Case Study:

Jahari graduates from high school in June. His mom was so proud of him and she didn't even seem to be high at his graduation. She threw him a huge BBQ party at their house and it seemed like every neighbor and family member stopped by to celebrate Jahari's accomplishment. Uncle Kev made a point to pull Jahari aside to tell him just how proud Jahari's father would have been to see Jahari graduate from high school. "You know Jahari, you did something that not many men in our family can do. In fact, | think you are the first man to graduate high school and have plans to do something positive with your life. Keep doin' what you're doing'. Stay focused on your education and career." With that, Uncle Kev looked at Jahari with a huge smile and gave him a great big hug and the two rejoined the party. It was a good day.

Before graduating Jahari started working at the local restaurant to save money for his upcoming fall semester of trade school. He always liked messing around with cars and always seemed to be helping his friends and neighbors fix theirs. His tech teacher suggested he pursue a career in car mechanics after high school and helped Jahari complete his application for the school.
