Communication and Power This week, we looked at a variety of theories and perspectives addressing issues surrounding power in relationships and marriages. We looked at Relative Love and Need Theory, Principal of Least Interest and Resource of Theory of Power (Cohen & Strong 2021). Each basically explains powers in terms of the partner's involvement and needs in the relationship. According to Waller, the partner who has the least interest in continuing the relationship holds more power. While Sprecher and Felmlee noted that partners who are more emotionally involved and more invested in the relationship are perceived to be less powerful. The effect that these principles have on communication is that partners who are perceived to be more powerful are dominant and controlling while those that are more emotionally involved are more compromising, avoid conflict and submissive to maintain peace and harmony. In relation to intimacy and conflict, blatant use of power negatively influences intimacy (Cohen and Strong). If a partner feels as though they are being forced, has no say or feels vulnerable, it is very difficult to genuinely give themselves completely to the pleasures of intimacy.
