How incident has affected either cognitively or emotionally

Project Assignment: Introduction to Facilitate Workplace Debriefing and Support Process

For this project you need to conduct the Mitchell Debriefing Model for 2 staff members following the following scenario:

Mitchell Debriefing Model - Phases of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing

Phase 1 - Introduction

The team members introduce themselves and facilitators describe the process. Guidelines are set out for the sessions and, if required, motivational exercises are used for group members to engage in the process. Discussion by group members is voluntary and the sessions are kept confidential. Introduction to the sessions is important to ensure that group members feel safe. (Mitchell, nd.)

Phase 2 - Facts

Participants are encouraged to provide brief facts of the incidents. They are discouraged at this stage from providing too much detail. Each person is given an opportunity to provide a brief description of what occurred, however they are discouraged from discussing their reactions at this stage, and they have the option of not contributing if they wish.

Phase 3 - Thoughts

This phase is a transition from cognitive (what happened) to affective (how you feel about the situation) domain. Participants may be asked about their first thoughts about the incident. This stage is still an orderly process where each person gets an opportunity to talk.

Phase 4 - Reactions

This phase is the main part of the debriefing process. Here participants get the opportunity to share their feelings about the incidents. Group members are encouraged to add to the conversation until the group runs out of issues and concerns.

Phase 5 - Symptoms

Participants are asked about how the incident has affected them either cognitively, physically or emotionally.

Phase 6 - Teaching

Once symptoms are expressed, the facilitators will attempt to normalise the symptoms. Explanations are provided for the reactions discussed and further stress management techniques may be taught to participants.

Phase 7 - Re-Entry

In the final stage, participants have the opportunity to make final statements. The facilitator summarises what has been discussed and any further information is provided for the participants.

Critical Incident Scenario:

The Bright Future group delivers intervention and group programs for young people who have been identified as at risk for re offending. You are the team leader and have two volunteers who are recent migrants from China help with the group.

During the last session, a young client, Tim, verbally abused both volunteers, using racist language and had to be restrained by the other clients. After his outburst, Tim left the centre before you became aware of the incident and only knew about it after you overheard clients talking about the incident.

The two staff members have gone through defusing and demobilisation activities

Part A

You need to conduct appropriate interventions for your staff members and ensure the organisation has appropriate procedures in place to ensure these situations don't occur again. Complete the following documentation to record the process of three debriefing sessions using the Mitchell Debriefing Model, keeping in mind you do not have to use every stage of the model in each session.

The response should include a reference list. Double-space, using Times New Roman 12 pnt font, one-inch margins, and APA style of writing and citations.
