The immune system protects the body from infection through innate and adaptive immune responses. Innate immunity is the body's nonspecific defense system that is present at birth and responds quickly to pathogens. Adaptive immunity, on the other hand, is a specific defense system that develops after exposure to a pathogen and creates immunological memory for future protection (Parker et al., 2026). While innate immunity provides immediate protection, adaptive immunity produces a stronger and more targeted response over time.
The first line of defense is part of innate immunity and includes physical and chemical barriers that prevent pathogens from entering the body. These defenses include the skin, mucous membranes, tears, saliva, stomach acid, and normal microbiota. If pathogens pass through the first line, the second line of defense is activated. The second line also belongs to innate immunity and includes processes such as inflammation, fever, phagocytosis, and antimicrobial proteins. White blood cells like macrophages and neutrophils help destroy invading microorganisms during this stage (Parker et al., 2026).
The third line of defense is the adaptive immune response. This response involves lymphocytes, specifically B cells and T cells, which recognize specific antigens. B cells are responsible for producing antibodies that target pathogens, while T cells help destroy infected cells and coordinate immune responses. One important feature of adaptive immunity is memory, which allows the immune system to respond more rapidly and effectively if the same pathogen enters the body again.
