write relation to a Women Studies course called "Introduction to Feminism and Popular Culture".

It is called Douglas Kellner's 'Three Components of Cultural Studies'.

Title: Cultural Studies, multiculturalism, and media culture

how I could relate Kellner's three components to the advertisement I have chosen.

Introduction to Feminism and Popular Culture
For this assignment, you can choose any media image that interests you. The only restrictions are as follows:

1. your media image should connect with the themes we are investigating in WGS205;

2. you need to choose one image per analysis (though it could be one ad that contains multiple images, for example);

3. you need to be able to attach a copy of the image to your analysis (that could mean taking a photo of the image and then printing out that image);

4. you need to be able to apply Kellner's three "components of critical cultural studies" in your analysis of the original image (see below for more details); and

5. you need to use and cite one additional article from WGS 205 in your analysis (see below for suggested articles to use).

In broad terms, you are reading the messages in the image when it comes gender, racialization, sexuality, class, ability, age and other social categories. Note however that you are not required to choose an image that represents "difference": messages about gender, racialization, sexuality and so on are also contained in an image of an apparently cisgendered, white, heterosexual, nondisabled, affluent man.

Start by describing the image. As well as the contents of the image (such as, who or what do we see? how are the figures or objects positioned? what's in the foreground? what are the lighting and colours like? is there written text? what does it say?), include details about the purpose of the image (such as, is it an ad, a newspaper or blog illustration, a magazine cover?) and the setting of the image (such as, where does or did it appear? how did you see the image? is it widely available?).

This should be about 1 paragraph of writing.
Now comes the analysis, or your chance to draw out the larger context of the image, the underlying messages in the image, and the (potential) effects of the image. If this list sounds familiar, you know your Kellner! You need to make sure that your analysis considers each of the three "components of critical cultural studies" Douglas Kellner describes in the article for July 6. In your analysis, discuss your image using the components of "production and political economy" (pp. 12-13), "textual analysis" (pp.13-15), and "audience reception and use of media culture" (pp.15-18).

The article by Wendy Peters (for July 18) is a great example of how to apply all of Kellner's components, particularly "production and political economy." You should also refer to Bobo and Gill, as well as Clare and Rony, for suggestions about specific details to pay attention to in analyzing production, image, and audience. Note that you can use any style of citation you are familiar with.

No bibliography is necessary if you only refer to course readings.
