Rewrite and make sense don't change much just change some wording on Human beings exhibit a wide range of differences shaped by diverse cultural backgrounds, which invariably influence their behaviors and interactions in various contexts. In adult learning environments, these differences can manifest as disruptive behavior, often unwittingly adopted by learners (Langvin, 2023). In certain instances, however, some individuals may intentionally engage in disruptive conduct, undermining the learning experience for themselves and others.
During a recent training session I conducted, I encountered a particularly disruptive participant, a senior adult whose actions not only hindered my delivery of the material but also created a challenging atmosphere for other attendees. This individual interrupted my presentation on essential safety precautions regarding fire alarms, repeatedly dismissing the information I tried to convey. His disruptive comments included remarks about having previously viewed the PowerPoint visuals, punctuated by sarcastic laughter, which drew frustration from other participants. One learner even expressed their dissatisfaction with this person's behavior, highlighting the adverse effects of such disruptions on group dynamics.
Aware that the situation was escalating and impacting the overall experience of the session, I decided to take a break to consult with my supervisor regarding the ongoing disruptions. My supervisor intervened and confronted the participant, who offered no justifiable explanation for his conduct. A subsequent drug and alcohol test revealed that he was under the influence of substances, which ultimately led to his removal from the training environment with instructions to return once he was sober.
This intervention proved successful; after the participant's departure, the remaining participants engaged enthusiastically with the content, providing positive feedback, creating an impressive 8 out of 10. The following day, the disruptive individual attended counseling, where he disclosed that he was grappling with a tumultuous divorce, which had played a significant role in his substance abuse essentially using drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism. This was sad to hear that the participant was facing such challenges, the supervisor then asked the participant why he didn't reach out to share his problems with them so that he could get help, however the disruptive participant kept quiet. After counselling and general talk, we could see that he needed help to make sure that he would be helped by the relevant professionals who deal with mental issues.
