In 2009 the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) legislation was ratified by president Obama and enforced which culminated in the implementation of electronic health records (EHR) in the United States. The Act was enacted in a bid improve the use of health information technology in order to boost healthcare outcomes as well as to improve healthcare system performance.
