How films are defined by certain conventions

Problem

The purpose of this prompt is to help you identify the functions of genre and to think closely about the importance of narrative structure. In order to earn a grade of "satisfactory," response should demonstrate knowledge of both genre conventions and the different types of narrative structure.

In the discussions of genre and narrative, we have examined how films are defined by certain conventions and narrative structures, including character point of view and narrative space. You will want to look carefully at a genre film that you recently have seen (see class notes or textbook for six examples of genre and their subgenres). Once you have decided on your film, you will want to reimagine the film as it would look in a different genre and narrative form. For example, The Keeping Room is a serious Western that uses third person narrative. You could reimagine the film as a horror film told from the perspective of an unreliable narrator. In doing this, you will want to select a film that we have not watched for class.
