Problem
Patterns are how we organize our ideas, or the relationships between the ideas we are discussing in our writing. Your papers will have paragraphs that are process, definition, illustration, comparison, contrast, problem, or solution. You get to decide which type of writing will work best to support your thesis. Then you will utilize those signal words and possible topic sentences to develop the outline for the body of your papers. For example, I could have an essay about college expectations. Here are some possible body paragraph ideas for that essay: Definition of the word expectations and examples of how it relates to college. The cause for professors having high expectations. The effect of expectations on students. How expectations in college are similar to professional expectations. Aspects of college expectations that are different, or unique only to college.
