FIRST: Why is Impressionism so beloved? When the movement first came to public attention in the late 19thcentury, critics mocked the "unfinished" appearance of paintings. The style contrasted sharply with the officially-sanctioned French académie style. And yet, over time Impressionism has come to be embraced by art-lovers around the world. There are even contemporary painters who are still working in the impressionist style. What is it about Impressionism that has made it endure? For the sake of discussion, choose another style from the history of art that you believe deserves to be revived and give your reasons for its revival.
SECOND: Visual art is a powerful means of communication. By now you have learned that symbolism is the association of an idea with a visual image that stands for or suggests that idea. Iconography is the science of identifying and interpreting those symbols. When imagery is used in an attempt to mislead, promote or publicize a specific viewpoint, it is called propaganda. Note the similarities in the following images of George Washington, Napoleon, and Korean leader Kim Jong Un. What is the larger message these images are trying to convey? What subtle elements or details reinforce that message? How effective are the chosen symbols in supporting the overall message? Are these works art or propaganda or both? Find a symbol-rich contemporary image, perhaps from the area of advertising or politics, to analyze and share as a part of this discussion.
